Maryland Day | The Stephen Steward Shipyard

  • Galesville Heritage Museum 988 Main Street Galesville, MD, 20765 United States (map)

Celebrate Maryland Day!

Join the Galesville Heritage Museum as it celebrates Maryland Day with a special exhibit, “The Stephen Steward Shipyard.” This engaging display explores the shipyard’s historical significance within Anne Arundel County and highlights its important role in the region’s maritime heritage.

Presented by the Galesville Heritage Society—a proud member of the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area—the program is part of a collaborative Maryland Day effort among local heritage organizations and businesses. Together, they celebrate and promote the area’s rich historical, cultural, and natural legacy.

The exhibit focuses on the Stephen Steward Shipyard, the site of Anne Arundel County’s only Revolutionary War battle. On March 31, 1781, British raiders burned Steward’s shipyard and home—an event that marked a pivotal moment in local history.

Visitors are encouraged to attend and learn more about 18th-century shipbuilding along the West River. The program offers valuable insight into period ship construction techniques and the broader maritime history that shaped the region.
