We would like to thank the students that participated in the Marie Smith Scholarship Award. The $1000 award is presented to a senior that is pursuing education beyond the high school level and can be used to attend vocational school or college. The students were asked to write an essay with the theme of, “Why do you think it is valuable to under-stand and appreciate the history of South County? How has living in South County contributed to your personal growth and development?” This year’s winner is Alicia Zang. She is the daughter of Catherine Vass and Matt Zang. She grew up in Deale until she was 8 and then moved to Tracey’s Landing. Alicia plans to attend AACC to pursue a career in nursing. She chose nursing as her career because she loves working with babies and because nurs-ing is a skill that will always be needed. Alicia would like to specialize in the fields of Post-partum and Natal Intensive Care. One of Alicia’s hobbies is dance, and for the last 4 years she has been on Southern’s Repertory Dance Company. She also enjoys photogra-phy and is currently taking classes to learn more about it. We wish her the best of luck in her future. Other participants this year were Summer Cox and Courtney Metcalf. Good luck to you in your future endeavors.
