We would like to thank all of the students who participated in the Marie M. Smith Scholarship Award. This award is given to a senior who is pursuing education beyond the high school level and can be used to attend vocational school or a two or four year college. The students are asked to submit a paper with the theme of, “How being raised in South County has contributed to my personal growth and development”.

The 2011 winner is Nicole Meyers. Nicole lives in Harwood and is the daughter of Nola and Donald Meyers. In August she will be attending Catholic University of America to pursue a degree in psychology. She chose this school because of her love of volunteering and wanted a faith based college. She plans on joining DC Reads which is a program sponsored through the college that helps tutor underprivileged children. The GHS board felt she really captured the feel of living in South County. We all wish her the best of luck.

Other participants included  Rachel Roth, Caitlin Bittinger and Anthony Simmons. They all did a great job which made the decision difficult. Good luck to all of the contributors in their future endeavors.
